Mini Sessions vs. Full Sessions: What’s Best for Your Family?

We've all been there. The mini session is quick, more affordable, and you might think, "I don’t need a ton of photos anyway." But then the questions creep in: What if my kids aren't in the mood during those fast-paced 15 minutes that feel more like five? On the other hand, a full session is a bigger investment, but it gives everyone more time to warm up, relax, and settle into the moment. Maybe that extra time is exactly what your family needs?

If you’ve found yourself stuck in this back-and-forth, wondering what’s truly best — and then not booking anything at all — you’re not alone. I've been there, too. That’s why I put together some simple guidelines to help you figure out if a mini session is the right fit for your family. Let's dive in and make the decision a little easier!

  1. What are your kids' personalities like? If your little ones need some time to warm up to new people, a full session might be the best fit. It gives everyone the chance to relax, settle in, and let those genuine, candid moments unfold naturally—especially the sweet in-between shots that happen when everyone feels truly at ease. On the other hand, if your kids are outgoing, energetic, and quick to engage, a mini session might be perfect! Short and sweet can help keep their interest high and energy focused. Every family is unique, and every child responds differently to having their photo taken. You know your kids best, and that insight is key to choosing the session that will bring out their personalities in the most authentic way.

  2. What kinds of photos are you envisioning? Thinking about how you plan to use your photos can really help determine which session type is right for you. If you're looking for a great shot for your holiday card and a few classic family combinations, a mini session is a great fit and covers all the essentials. But if you're dreaming of more creative, candid moments—those playful, genuine interactions that unfold naturally—a full session gives us the time and space to let that happen. There's no rush, no one waiting in line behind you, and we have more flexibility to incorporate props, games, or explore a variety of settings.

  3. Do you already have a location in mind for your photos? Mini sessions are typically held at a predetermined spot, so if that location doesn’t match the vision you have, a full session might be the better choice. Maybe you’re imagining Christmas card photos at a tree farm, or perhaps you’re hoping for a more relaxed, lifestyle session right at home—both are wonderful options that require a bit more flexibility. It all comes down to what you're envisioning. Having a clear idea of the setting and feel you want before booking will help ensure your session aligns perfectly with your goals.

Honestly, there’s no right or wrong choice—it all depends on the season your family is in right now. As a mom of a two-year-old and a three-month-old, I totally get how unpredictable little ones can be. Personally, I tend to shy away from mini sessions because it usually takes my toddler a bit to warm up, and at his age, moods can swing quickly! With a full session, I know we’ll have the time and space to let him ease in without feeling rushed, which helps us capture those genuine, happy moments.

In our own family, we usually book one full session and one mini session each year—it gives us the best of both worlds. But truly, it’s all about your goals and what feels right for your family right now.
