This was my first time attending a quinceañera as both a guest and photographer, and it’s an experience I won’t forget. Belém and her family traveled all the way from Washington to Newcastle to celebrate her 15th birthday with close friends and family, many of whom came from Northern California. We started the day with some photos by a beautiful pond, where Belém, looking stunning in her dress, was joined by her siblings and cousins. From there, we headed to the Newcastle Portuguese Hall, where the celebration began in full swing.

What really stood out to me was the incredible support and warmth from Belém’s family. Relatives came from all over, including from Guatemala, to be part of her big day. Her court—her siblings and cousins—sat up front with pride, and her father shared an emotional first dance with her. Her aunt led a moving candle-lighting ceremony, and the night ended with a delicious meal and plenty of dancing. It was a genuine celebration of family and togetherness that felt truly special.

I walked away from the day feeling so grateful for the opportunity to not only witness but also learn about a culture different from my own, all while being welcomed with open arms as one of their own. It was an experience that truly touched my heart.
