When Styling Indoors

For in-home sessions, neutrals and rich textures are your best friends. Remember, neutrals don't have to mean just beige; softer tones and gentle pastels create a timeless look. Consider your home's decor: if it's colorful, opt for whites and soft creams for balance. If your space is more neutral, a pop of color can add some flare. Most importantly, choose outfits that are comfortable and reflect your unique style!

How I Styled My Family For Our In-home Session

When we lived in Oklahoma City, a photographer I look up to so much Haley Kinzie, came and took our in-home family shoot. We were moving in a couple of months and wanted to commemorate this season of buying our first home and bringing our son home here.

Process:

  1. I decided on what "feel" I wanted to have for the photos. We are a very casual family so I knew jeans for both my husband and I was the direction we were going to go.

  2. Our home is very warm and has colors throughout, so I opted for neutral shirts for both Caleb and I. However, both of our shirts have texture to them. His had a knitted feel and mine was a linen feel.

  3. I love a good matching set for babies, especially boys so I went with a linen dark blue set that would match the vibe of our home and had that texture.

When Styling Outdoors

Things to consider for an outdoor shoot is location, weather and how much you will be moving around. If it is chilly outside, style with layers in mind and for warmer days, style with light, airy materials. The biggest thing with outdoor locations is to not match your background. If your session is in a grass field, avoid wearing lots of green. However, if your session is in a wheat field or the city, green would look great. The goal is to not blend in with your surroundings.

Example:

  • The colors don't match the background

  • Mom is wearing a patterned dress

  • The girls are wearing a textured linen dress that matches moms dress

  • Dad has a neutral shirt with buttons that incorporates that layered look
